Surf Wax 101: What It Is and How to Choose the Right One

Posted by Shop Account on

Surf wax is one of the most essential — and underrated — pieces of gear in a surfer’s setup. It’s what keeps your feet from slipping on your board and gives you the grip you need to paddle, pop up, and turn with control.

What Is Surf Wax?

Surf wax is a specially formulated wax applied to the deck of your surfboard (except where a traction pad is used). It creates a textured surface that helps your feet stay planted, especially in critical moments like takeoffs, turns, and landings.

Basecoat vs. Topcoat

  • Basecoat Wax: Harder wax that goes on first. It creates the foundation — little bumps that your topcoat sticks to. You only need to apply this once (or after cleaning your board).

  • Topcoat Wax: Softer wax that sits on top of the basecoat. This is what gives you day-to-day grip. You’ll apply and refresh this regularly.

Temperature Matters

Surf wax comes in different formulas based on water temperature. Using the wrong one can lead to wax melting off or becoming too hard to grip.

Water Temp (°C)

Tropical

19–24°C

Warm

14–19°C

Cool

Under 14°C

Cold

Always match your wax to the water you’re surfing in — and switch it out as seasons change.

Application Tips

  • Apply basecoat in a crosshatch or circular motion until you get solid bumps.

  • Rub topcoat over the bumps just before your session.

  • Keep your wax cool — hot cars will melt it fast.

  • Peel off and re-wax when it starts to flatten out or get dirty.
