Which futures fins should I buy?
John John Florence is the 2016 world champion and he did it using his signature John John Techflex Future Fins, Futures Fins may not be the household name in fin technology but that didn't stop them this year...
Despite the fact that Futures team riders only make up 22% of the top 32:
40% of the contests in 2016 were won by guys on Futures.
45% percent of surfers in WCT finals in 2016 were riding Futures.
Now, i'm not saying riding Futures Fins will guarantee you a WSL championship but getting the correct size and template for your style could transform an old board or stop you spinning out in critical sections.
The most important thing when choosing your next set of fins is getting the correct size for your weight. They have 4 catagories:
- X-SMALL, 34-52KG
- SMALL, 47-70KG
- MEDIUM, 65-88KG
- LARGE, 80KG+
The next step is to choose the template you want, and to help with this Futures have come up the ride number system. The ride number is on a scale from 1-10 and incorporates different feelings.
Futures say that "The feeling is represented on a scale, from Speed Generating to Speed Control (shown above). The closer you get to 10, the more springy, fluid & responsive your board will feel to help generate speed. The closer you get to 1, the more solid, engaged & predictable your board will feel to help control speed. Fins with a Ride Number around 5 feel balanced & do not add any premium feelings to your board - they let your board’s original character shine".
And it really is that simple, pick a feeling in your weight range, and give it a try. When you understand the different feels, you can get the most performance & enjoyment out of your equipment.
If that still seems a bit confusing, check out the video below..
And finally, we have a great range of Futures Fins covering all ride numbers available on our website which you can find here:
