We caught up with Ishka below on a few of the ups and downs of a special trip.
To be screened at the London Surf Film Festival 'Shorts' & right here in our Journal on the 28th October - for now enjoy the taster below and read on.
Music featuring The Lightening Tree by Finnegan Tui
Any sketchy moments ?
Nothing too wild, but it's always fun driving on the other side of the road. I have done a few Euro trips so I'm pretty used to it. But the tempatation to go the wrong way around the roundabouts is always there.
One of the sketchier moments you'l see from the drone clip at sunset scene where I went for a straight air in cross shore wind blowing away from the right and my board was un-stuck from my feet. I was pretty certain I was going to land on my back on my fins and board which would probably be certain to snap. It wouldn't have been the most comfortable 8 hours up to Brittany on the way home either haha.
When we first arrived, Hossegor was maxing out and not really handling the size. The rips were strong, and there weren’t many people out, so I was mostly surfing on my own. The first three days were a bit of a grind, trying to get clips while paddling against currents and getting caught inside.
Best moments ?
Towards the end of the trip some friends from home joined us at Star Surf Camps. It was pretty fun to have a solid crew there. We were joined by Luke Hart from collab surfboards on a team trip with a fellow Mango team rider Jowan Pegg and friends.
The last day we scored fun little waves and sunny weather — perfect way to wrap it up. We set up on the beach, brought lunch down, and just hung out all day.
The music in the film is great, what can you tell us about this ?
I have followed two paper squares for a few years and always loved their music. I originally found one of their songs in an old John John edit. I reached out to them to see if they would be happy to use their music, and stoked to be able to use Glass roads and Magledena in the film.
I was introduced to Finnegan Tui’s music by my parents and loved his movie Zephyr featuring a few friends and some of the places I have spent time around growing up in the film and I have been following his music for a few years. When I saw he had a new album out “Lost Tales” recently I instantly heard it and have been visualizing it to an edit. Greatly appreciative to Finn and the team from Two paper squares for the music.
Any shout outs ?
I'm really grateful for Sami and the Team at Star Surf Camps who had us stay for our trip. I have been going out to Star for a few years now and it's an amazing set up just a short walk down the beach in Moliets, such a good crew of staff who I'm happy to say I have made good friends with. Olly has also previously worked for them so it was great we were able to link up and stay there. Thanks again for the hospitality.
